Went to library today to try to read for it. Library sucks nowadays. No good magazines. British newspapers rock. They are big and have lots of content in them. Read a good chunk of “The Sunday Times”.

Anyway the state of the SE presentation is undefined as of now. Have no clue and no direction on how we are going to blabber for 15 minutes and act for another 7. And knowing some of my beegle-eyed-cow-faced-dog-brained buddies (read “Thiruvengadachari Prashant, Neeraj Tharwani, Manish Jain”) I can be sure of a few rounds of the dreaded two syllables that are a misfortune of my infinite name (for the uninformed the last bit means I am wondering how much longer till VV realizes ppl shout IV IV and not VV VV)

linux, 14.6 and need for speed

NFS MW out. For the uninformed MW stands for Most Wanted and NFS stands for “Need For Speed”. Anyway, I dont have time to write a full review so I will just mention a few striking features …

1. The game rocks
2. Storyline and gameplay kinda similar except that you dont have to drive around arbitrarily looking for races
3. The pursuit mode rocks, its fun blowing up cop cars

Linux

As part of the ongoing migration to linux I have been looking for a proper client for DC. Valknut IMHO sucks. So I found linuxdcpp. Get it from http://students.iiit.net/~aprameya/linuxdcpp.tar.bz2 (if that does not appear as a link blogger sucks). Just run the executable (dcpp) in that folder. If for some reason it does not run or you want to compile it yourself get scons (just do a search at rpmfind.net for it) and install. Then run “scons” at the directory where you untarred.

14.6 was not accessible from WLAN for some time. Apparently it was blocked at the wlan router (172.17.0.2), I have no idea why they did that (actually i dont know who they are either), but that sort of crap makes me think wtf…

the linux saga – part I

I had decided to switch to linux. So this Wednesday I decided to actually make the switch. Decided to try out Mandriva 10.0, it had got some good reviews. Now I did not feel like burning the ISO due to two major reasons

(1) My cd-r drive conked out a long time ago
(2) I did not have blank cd’s

So, what does one do??? I decided to raw copy the first cd to an empty partition and boot from it, hence issued

cat MDK-CD1.iso > /dev/hdb2

and told grub to boot from hdb2. In theory this should work but it did not. So, I figured it was a problem with “cat” and I dd’d the image onto hdb2. That also did not work.

After these initial failures (which had caused countless reboots) I gave up and asked vishnu to burn the iso. First attempt, he burned the ISO as a file to the CD-R. Second attempt it got burned correctly, except that the initial ramdisk image was the only file that was corrupt on the cd.

I thought, “Screw Mandriva. Lets repair FC4″. And then onwards I have been in FC4. This has to be the longest I have ever been in linux (not counting ssh to remote servers), its been close to 48 – 60 hours.

Anyway, Linux is good. Its faster than windows for all normal tasks like firefox, winamp etc. The only problem is the lack of a good dc++ client. That absolutely pisses me off. Valknut sucks man, Valknut sucks. After around 60 hours in linux I learned the following

(1) how to get the dumbass D-Link card to be detected and configured as a normal ethernet card.
(2) enabling global hotkeys for xmms.

PS1 – Played civilization 4. It actually sucks. However, its playable. As a long time fan of the series I’d say that they screwed up the gameplay.

PS2 – We have to do a BTP instead of a FYP.

orangilla and linux

Went out yesterday for manish and sid’s treat. Food was good. The interesting thing was orangilla i.e. what you get when you mix orange and vanilla flavoured ice creams together and eat. Its really nice. Try it out sometime.

While coming back we tried to have some serious discussions. In the end the following conclusions were drawn:

(a) its impossbile to have a serious discussion with the right type of people present
(b) all serious discussions will goto bc eventually i.e. lim t -> infinity (serious discussion -> bc)
(c) there is a fine line between “deep” thought and meaningless statements
(d) Homer Simpson: Can god heat a sandwich so much that he cannot touch it??

linux

The alert reader must have noticed linux in the title. Well, that is because I plan to switch full time to linux. Its not because of some linux loyalty or other crap but more due to a careful analysis of my time spent on the computer. The master plan is that on windows I will ONLY install the graphics card drivers, DirectX and GAMES. On linux will be the day to day crap i.e. word, acrobat, messenger, media player, dc++ etc … (I am reasonably PISSED at windows, its too darn slow)

sayunara compilers

Compilers exam finished yesterday. The first thought after the end of the exam, hurrah, its over, lets play some bf2. (incidentally i rocked in the afternoon, got shitload of kills in karkaland with a tank and an engineer).

Of course it finished in a really upsy daisy way. After reading the paper I was like whoa!!! What is SSA??? What is register to register memory blah blah blah?? Where does Zulu get such questions from?? Who is Zulu anyway to ask such questions?? How come there are still 2.95 hrs to bf2 left??

1.5 hours into the exam and Im still wondering what SSA is … I try to remember all that I’ve studied. So I figure its something to do with SyntAx trees. Dont remember any of syntax trees either so I end up writing assembly.

Then Zulu comes and someone asks him what SSA is. He just raises both his hands straight up into the air and makes grunting like noise. Then goes on to say some stuff in Telegu which I dont understand but Venkaiah finds very funny. A short conversation in Telegu later Im back to what is SSA?

Anyway exam finishes and no one knows what SSA is except Manish + Booshi and Ashish Goel (who only knows it was in a book by Cooper). After that the day was insanely good. Played lot of bf2, slept for 4 hours, Played yet more bf2, watched a movie. Except for that exam it was a nice day.

LA Confidential
Another Kevin Spacey film. Have seen a lot of them lately and come to the conclusion that he is a good actor. Also starring Russell Crowe this film is about crooked cops and busting up a racket in LA. Nice, worth a watch.

Confidence
Some guy and Rachel Weisz star in this movie. A reasonable plot, nice direction, good acting. Its the con people and get away with it type of plot, similar to Ocean’s 11. Again, good timepass.

a wasted day

Saturday, 2 Days before POPL

1000 hrs

I wake up. Dimly aware that its saturday and there are two days before POPL I decide to make a plan for the day. The plan is pretty simple. Study Compilers after lunch, Study networks after compilers, play bf2 after dinner. After all I say, I read harry potter in six hours, why cant I read the 100-200 pages in compilers one and a half.

1400 hrs
Its after lunch. I start again with compilers. After successfully reading the ppt on Runtime I decide to take a break. A small break. So I start watching some chess games.

1800 hrs
Still watching chess games. Saw an amazing game between Fischer and D.Bryne. Fischer destroyed Bryne, and he was only 13. Another brilliant game between Kasparov and Karpov. Of course the schedule had gone down the drain so I modify it, decide to scrap networks from the schedule.

2100 hrs
Find out that people would rather study than go play bf2. Extremely pissed at this point. Decide to actually read compilers. Reach slide 35 in Code Generation for the third time and give up.

2300 hrs
Me and shamanth doing bc. Then we goto bbc’s site to do some arbitrary surveys. Tipo had taken a survey on his brain’s sex (incidentally he found out that he preffered masculine women). Shamanth takes the same survey. I then take some three to four more surveys there. Notably amongst them I take a survey on art and it turns out that I like Abstract art.

Resonable action film staring Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Nice timepass with good action, reasonable performances and an ok-ish story. Sameul L Jackson is a negotiator who stumbles onto some bad cop stuff and then holds people hostage to try to figure out the truth.

Donnie Brasco

A good film with solid performances by Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. Based on the true story of Pistone (Depp), a FBI agent infiltrating the mafia and how it affects his life. Well worth a watch.
