the mobile phone conundrum

its settled. im getting a new phone.

specifically, i dropped the old one in water.

so, went over to a mobile phone shop yesterday. had a look at what was there.

there is sid’s phone, motorola clam shell type of one. but that doesnt look very interesting

there is neeraj’s phone, which i feel is kinda expensiveish … costs arnd 10K for its feature set

there is nokia 6270 – i liked this one. it has a 2mp camera, stereo speakers and comes with a 512MB flash card. mostly i figure i’d get this one.

there also is a nokia 6280 – similar to 6270. supports 3G which is supposed to be the next in thing but costs 4000 bucks more and comes with a 128 mb card

then there is a nokia n70 – which seems to be a pointless waste of money.

what really took my breath away was the n80. solid phone with awesome features. it has a 3mega px camera, wifi, bluetooth, mp3 player and what not. looked real nice as well. neat design. sadly the stupid thing costs arnd 30K. this is the one that i’d really really really like to get.  sadly i cant justify it in any damn way . hence i feel kinda down.

oh, there is also an n90 with 4gb memory and all but thats as big and bulky as a tata truck. so, no thanks, i’d rather get an ipod.

anyway, till yesterday when my phone had not gone in water i was slightly aware of the need to get a new camera phone. any phone would have done, as long as it’d have a camera etc … one visit to the god damn showroom, seeing the n80 … i am like “i  really really really want that phone”.

i’d like to write a paragraph on how irrational that is but then i figure what the heck. it’d be very very filosofical. probably be a little deep.

been seeing a lot of the world cup. and messi is god, argentina godlike.

why do I say that?? well, the messi thing is mostly because he did play jolly good when he came on. (and of course all the pundits and siddarth are calling him godlike). argentina because they played the best football I have seen in a long long time. the campi****** goal was the best i've seen in a while. kinda reminded me of the mexican goal in the last world cup. 

imho, (i am sure you are sick of humble opinions on the world cup but please do bear with me and hear out my 2 cents worth), argentina will win if they play like this.

england are more like pussy-nation. they play like wimps. its like they left their balls at home. with players like gerrard, lampard, beckham, joe cole, owen one would expect much better attacking flair. and where the (((( is paul scholes??

the dutch deserve to be kicked out for playing very bad football. ivory coast were eliminated because of bad luck?? thats just a load of crap. if you saw that match, the dutch were cheating like there was no tomorrow (humours similie / metaphor generating unit offline). the referee also sucked ass (or was he also cheating in another one of FIFA's matchfixing scandals). given the way ivory coast played they deserve to get to the semi-finals atleast. 

france look like crap when they are playing. brazil also looked crappish but I guess they will come back to form.

also, it seems that people (read tipo) have stopped playing games. really shocked to hear that. he must be working 24×7 on his project.

On the internet it is possible to be anonymous on a peer to peer network. However, when we consider such a network on a LAN anonymity becomes harder to achieve. The fact that someone can just do a reverse lookup on your IP and find out who you are can be irritating to some.

Tipo suggested authentication as an alternatvie. Authentication based on some public serverr. The problem with such a scheme seems to be the irritation that it would cause. Imagine having to type a username / password each time you log in. Furthermore it again is not very secure.

The crux of the problem is that identification is easy based on an IP / MAC address. The only way that I can see of circumventing that is to put a proxy in the middle. Of course, with the amount of data transfer that occurs over a p2p network there would be huge load on said proxy.

So, if someone can come up with a way to implement security and anonymity over p2p please ping me …

the movie, the moon and the IIIT

after a long time I saw a movie.

and I know you are not exactly waiting with baited breath to listen to the title of the movie. Most of you must be going “Yeah, so friggin what!!! You saw a movie. Big Deal. Go stuff a lemon” and that kind of conversation.

therfore, hence and without further ado I will say I saw taxi 9211. And will review it in one line so that you dont continue to go about saying above mentioned stuff. Its a decent film with some shreds of a plot. Decent acting by John Bhram and Nana Patekar.

Spoke to my Dad the other day … video conferencing. He was (whats the word I am looking for) appalled at my unkept hair and unshaven look. Most comments directed at me ended with some reference to Mullah / Afganistan / Osama Bin Laden. So I decided to shave. And now I look as dark as the moon without the pockmarks and with a weird haircut

Of course, for some strange reason labs are going to be closed. So far there have been no protests recorded. Only a meeting in which the CC (campuslife chaps) were told about the BC (bijli cut). And the new sysadmins seem to be having a dekko at stuff they should let live. So, basically the question that we have to ask is why?

and what do we do about it? Of course, if this type of stuff continues then we will soon be living in a very dictatorial type of IIIT (am I the only one noticing this?). What we need is an underground resistant movement type of thingie? Once it is big enough we will surface. We can probably ask sumeet g for ideas … maybe give some rasta rokos or do a human chain …

But all that stuff is way in the future. First like any good underground movement we need a leader. So, I nominate tipo. (yeah, the guy who blogs in python and sits in CDE and works in linux all day and is the geekiest guy on campus). Other nominations include manish jain (the guy who lives by pink() and is afraid of water). Bokaro and MSAR (there is no way in hell you can guess who this is).
