DC and ARP

Cognitive class makes a lot more sense if you have had less than 10 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours. -CeG <oBelIX>

Before I start another post, I’d like to point out that this is not as much of A Random Post as it is A Research Paper post.

The whole of the last week went in writing a research paper on the BTP. Apparently, its a heck of a lot harder to write your work than to do your work. Seriously, it is really hard. The first draft that we wrote was pretty much crap (mostly because it was written when we had GRE). The second draft had some structure. Sadly, it was not appreciated by the general community. This draft had taken more than 12 hours to write.

Anyway, we rewrote this … It took another 12 hours. This time, we got the flow right. The only problem with papers is that they are constantly evolving. Days will go in just gathering the results and making graphs. (It feels very nice when you expect a hyperbola and get a hyperbola). Gathering results is a mind-numbing asinine job. Seriously … it sucks.

while 1:

    Write a draft

    Submit and get review

    Make changes in review

Anyway, yesterday finally this thingie got submitted. Boy am I glad. Pretty much hadn’t done anything much other than work on this over the last two days. Oh, and I’d like to thank everyone who helped … especially the people who read all the stuff that we had written and found out mistakes. Seriously, We owe you one. If I was more of the Wooster / VVHB type, I’d write a poem but then, my literary talents leave much to be desired. So I will deisist.

I’ve seen a bit of Malcolm in the MIddle. Its pretty funny. And the sysadmin’s are constantly blocking DC++. Very Very irritating. Of course, we have seen an improvement in the way they are blocking. Atleast they are using their heads. Anyway people are already going back to FTP servers … its like going back to the stupid stone age. I would appreciate a reason for the blocking … so if someone is close with the sysadmin’s then please enlighten the whole of the IIIT community on why such an action is being taken. Otherwise, its going to be a cat and mouse game. They block it, we figure out a way to unblock it. They go around this. We go around it again.

Currently, they are blocking DC++ based on the authentication packet. They read each and every packet on the wireless router, check if the packet contains “$Lock=…” (DC authentication text). If it does, they drop this packet at the router. Which is why DC++ just gets stuck at “Connected”. It is waiting for this packet from the hub. You can try it yourself. telnet to a hub from 200, the authentication will reach you. telnet from a wireless PC, it wont. I still question the utillity of reading each and every packet but then who am I.

No matter how much work you do T. Prashant will do more work than you do. -CeG<oBelIX>

The audio server is set up on 172.16.9.15. You can now connect to it using winamp/xmms also. The playlist is available here .-T. Prashant, -Md. Abdul Aziz

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of crosswords. It helps in improving English. Of course should have figured it out before GRE. A nice place to start is here.

If you haven’t read Mythalez’s latest post (The 2nd Encounter) please do. Its … well words fail me.

Oh and the audio player thingie is cool. Cool in the sense that it works. Of course they are really overloading 9.15 (where we all work) and spoiling our simulation times.

DOTA is incredibly boring now. Everyone has decided to go with the bloody rapier + aegis strat. Of course the fact that I haven’t won in a while aggravates this.

Amarok rocks.

Korea and the world

October 10, 2006

Occasionally, I post on world events and what not. So, it seems like these chaps in Korea have gone about blowing up one of those big bombs. Now, I see that China, South Korea and Japan have got reasons to worry about. After all, no one wants a crazy trigger happy shotgun carrying neighbour.

  • However, I do not see why the Americans have to be this paranoid. Now, I know, everyone blames the Americans for the worlds problems. Lets just review that list:
  • Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorism – Pretty much America’s brainchild … what with them supporting Jihad and all.
  • Afganistan – The americans went to war there. The rest of the world is cleaning up their mess. The afgans are the worst off.
  • Iraq – No WMDs. No valid reason for war. Except perhaps expanding the american empire and oil. What a waste.
  • Iran – So far, they have done nothing but say they want to use nuclear power for safe reason. Its an economically sound policy. Why not develop and use cheap nuclear power and sell expensive oil? But no one looks at it like that. Every American thinks that the Iranians are pretty much Israel hating lunatics who are going to blow up the whole of the middle east.
  • Korea – As I said, the South Koreans, Chinese, Japanese may have stuff to worry about. However, the US does nothing to help. At the six party talks they say that they are fully commited to supporting North Korea and will help with trade and oil and what not. Once the talks are concluded they put a whole chunk of sanctions on North Korea for violating some WTO trade agreements or what not. Just co-incidence or backstabbing tactics. If I were the North Korean leader, I’d build a bomb and put it on one of those long ranged missiles, just for leverage against the bullying of the USA.

Now, it may seem like I dont like the Americans a lot. Its not that. When Clinton was incharge, I think the world was generally a safer place. Ever since Bush came in there have been:

  • 9/11 bombings
  • The Afgan war
  • The Iraq war
  • The north Korean test
  • The Iran situation
  • The Israel / Lebanon war

Forgive me for sounding skeptical, but these are just way too many co-incidences.

ARP

October 7, 2006

Going to class is not a solution to boredom. -CeG <oBelIX>

Before you start getting all geeky on me, ARP has nothing to do with the Address Resolution Protocol. It basically stands for A Random Post. Kind of seems to be the in thing nowadays given VBH and Running Man Electrified’s blogs.

But, Fear Not. There will be exiguously many smileys in the post. (One of the advantages of learning GRE is that you know the meanings of a lot of words). The usage may be horrendously off but then you got to take a chance.

I gave one of the worst presentations in Cognitive Science. I figured, that with 14 slides, I’d have a heck of a lot to say. So, I would probably take a lot of time. Therefore, I spoke faster than a hampster on speed. Frankly, even I had no idea that I could speak that fast. The only good thing was the conclusion of the first section.

I figure some of you remember Raul. From the post on random conversations on yahoo. Anyhoo, his presentation once again proved that he is pretty much the king, queen and jack of smooth talking. I figure that even Wooster would have a hard time beating him.

Oh, and I almost forgot the customary jibe at VBH. He has complained of being alone early in the mornings with nothing to do. (Not much we can do there). Of course, I took the liberty of estimating just how many smileys are there in a VBH post. And guess what – there is approximately one smiley in 0.83 paragraphs. (Yes, it comes from actual Math). The method used for computing this was to find the differential of the co-efficient of textual identity with respect to the rate of change of the lengths of paragraphs and then integrate it over all his blog posts in a complex quasi dimensional dynamic pseudo random bivariant space.

The one with random stuff – III

October 2, 2006

If the water cooler on your floor is not working you would rather go to the floor below to fill water than the floor above. – CeG <oBelIX>

It may look like I have a lot of things to do. Actually, it is probably like that. The last I checked my things to do list was growing faster than the increasing volume of the sound of a stampede of rhinoceros charging towards you. Yes, you may have guessed that I suck at analogies. Probably explains the not so good GRE score.

Apparently, the GRE score is not all that counts. *phew* you’d think. I should have a very good SOP and some letters recommending me. Thankfully the ideal time to apply is January to March so I will procrastinate till then. Of course this was told to me by GS so if something goes wrong I will lynch him.

There was AHSSME the other day. HSSM exams have usually been the most interesting. The first HSSM (English),. I missed a grade by 0.5 points. The second HSSM accounts, I took keeping in line with the institute’s policy on HSSM’s. They should broaden your horizons I thought. They are for a break from the regular cs you study (pun intended). They are for full and complete development and what not. However, that did not go very well with either me or some of the other people who took the course based on my “follow institute philosophy” advice.

Then there was ethics. Most noted for falling asleep during the end sem and Ujwal poking me in the back saying “wake up”. In STS I decided to get an A in an HSSM. I was told that all you have to do is write a lot. So, I wrote 11 additionals. Anyway, I guess I improvced the grade from a B to an A-.

Coming over to the current incumbent. A perspective of industry and society. It has notes with sentences like time space distantiation leads to time and space being organized by the the presence or absence of. There are other very evil examples. Anyway while studying we came up with the following answer.

The chinese are very industrious. They built the great wall of china. The mongols tried to get through the great wall. The mongols employed a chinese engineer to build a big cannon. The biggest cannon was built by a turkish chap for the siege of constantinople.Constantinople was the capital of Byzantium. Byzantium was anniahlated by the turks. The turks live in Turkey. Turkey wants to join the EU. There is no hollywood in the EU. Most movies made in Hollywood are crap. Crap Bag was the name of phoebe’s husband in friends. Friends are forever. Forever is a relative term.

And this goes on and on and on. Cleverly, by using the word industrious in the first sentence we can fool the person who is checking into believing the answer is very relevant. I am sure he would be impressed by the scope of the answer. It can be (and is) all encompassing. I think they can make this a “whose line” game.

Also, I finally found the backup of DF. Restored it and had fun for a day. For some reason the DF culture of the older batches has pretty much gone swirling down the drain.

I like Peyton. She’s kinda very cute. Yes, I am talking about One Tree Hill. Probably named after a hill with a tree on it. Kinda like the movie “The englishman who went up a hill but came down a mountain“.
