the pc woes

by oBelIX

Consider the following …

It is 3AM. Nice morning. I am peacefully asleep. Dreaming about a beach in the south of France …

Suddenly for some strange reason I wake up. Brain in neutral gear. I think. Brain now in first gear. “Whoa !!! That’s weird. Who turned off the lights?” Then I hear “Beep. Beep. Beep. “. Brain skips two gears and jumps to fifth. Quite awake, I realize that the sound is coming from the computer.

Apparently the harddisk does not seem to be very pleased. Its going “Beep. Beep. Beep” as I said before. So I follow the age old advice – REBOOT. Now the PC does not get past the BIOS. “Crap!!” I think out loud.

Then began some troubleshooting. I take out the harddisks and plug in only the 120 GB one. It still goes “Beep Beep Beep” like a censored episode of Southpark. So I take out the 120GB and plug in the 40GB. “Ahhh!!!”. No Beeps now. Then I think “Crap!!!”, I dont have an OS on that one. So I go back to sleep thinking that the 120 GB harddisk has crashed. (Along with our honours project. Some of you may wonder, How come I have just one backup??? Let me explain … Our hp was on CVS on 205. Then they knocked off our 205 accounts. So I copied my 205 to my PC and nowhere else).

The next morning, thinking its the SMPS’s fault (I hate SMPS’s, they fail very often) I try Monga’s SMPS. That solves the problem. Then I try with my SMPS and without the Card. That also solves the problem. Elated, I jump around on one foot (not literally) and decide that the prudent thing to do would be to swap cards.

So finally, today after four days I have swapped graphics cards with Manish Jain. (If you dont know Manish Jain, pls do a google search and do not click on the first link). So, now I have a GeForce FX 5200 :(( (I had a radeon 9800 PRO earlier) but the computer is working i.e. I can watch movies / everybody loves raymond / check mail etc ….
